Criteria

SELECTION CRITERIA

The following are the selection criteria set by the Governing Body of our school:

  • No child shall be precluded from being a learner of Sweet Valley Primary School on the basis of race, colour or creed.
  • The child must be proficient in the language medium of the school, i.e. English. The child must be age appropriate for the class for which admission is sought. The child must achieve the required level of performance.
  • Consideration will be given to siblings of current learners residing within/outside the catchment area, but acceptance is not guaranteed.
  • The limitation on the number of learners per grade, as stipulated by the Governing Body of the school, should be 120 learners per grade. If, however, further applications are received from residents within the catchment area, these can be considered, but at no time may the number of learners per grade exceed 128.

Residents in the Catchment area

The school will accept children into classes for which they are age appropriate, provided that:

  • Those children are permanently resident in the School’s catchment area,
  • The application is timeously received,
  • The number of learners per grade does not exceed the limitation set out above.

Applications for Pre-primary & Grade 1 can be submitted 2 years in advance, i.e. when school re-opens at the beginning of the year the child turns 4 years of age. The enrolment for Grades R and 1 is usually finalised by the end of May in the preceding year. Applications received thereafter cannot be guaranteed a place in the school.

The catchment area is defined as that geographic area within which Sweet Valley Primary School is the nearest state primary school when the distance is measured along a public road.  Please consult an area street guide or speak to the admissions secretary to establish whether you fall into the catchment area.

Residents outside the Catchment area

Where a child is not permanently resident in the School’s catchment area, admission will be granted at the discretion of the Principal and the Governing Body. We must point out that, while every effort will be made to accommodate learners residing outside our catchment area, this may not be possible.

Pre-Primary Applications

In addition to the above criteria we would like to point out the following:

  • Our Pre-primary is a small, private section of the school.  Consideration will be given to siblings of our current learners, but acceptance is not guaranteed.
  • We therefore advise parents who do not yet have children at our school to make alternative arrangements in the event that no vacancies are available.
  • Children attending the Sweet Valley Pre-Primary School are automatically enrolled for Grade 1 in the Sweet Valley Primary School and no additional application will therefore be necessary.
