As a result of Sweet Valley Primary School's Christian ethos, the children are afforded opportunities to get involved in various outreach programmes in the local community, through the support of charities and interaction with less privileged schools in the Cape Peninsula.
Each Grade in the school has partnered with a specific charity, and various activities are provided in order to give every child the chance to learn about the work that these charities do and to respond to their needs by raising funds, holding collection drives, and where possible making personal contact with the beneficiaries.
At the moment, the charities supported in this way are :
Grade 1: Little Angels
Grade 2: Marsh Memorial Home
Grade 3: TEARS
Grade 4: South African Guide Dogs for the Blind
Grade 5: St Luke's Hospice
Grade 6: Beautiful Gate
Grade 7: Maitland Cottage Home
In addition, the entire school supports at least one other charity per term. In the past this has included collecting Easter Eggs for children in the townships, collecting items for displaced refugees, supporting Casual Day, the Chaeli Campaign, CAFDA, the Sunflower Fund, the SPCA, Friends Day Centre, Red Cross Children's Hospital, Girls' and Boys' Town, The Carthorse Protection Association and City Mission.
During the year, the choir and Grade 3's enjoy entertaining the elderly in our community. They visit Rusoord to present their Spring Show and the choir and drama club present the Grandparents Concert at the school. This is always a great success.
At the end of the year, our Foundation Phase invites the children from Constantia Primary School to the annual Christmas Party. Father Christmas always arrives in an interesting way and hands out gifts to these excited children. Each child then receives a party pack and something to drink.
A new initiative at Sweet Valley is Afri Twin, where interaction is encouraged between three schools - two local schools and one from overseas. The schools linked with Sweet Valley are Levana Primary in Lavender Hill and Christleton Primary in the United Kingdom.
