Extra-Murals:

Hockey

There is a good tradition of hockey at Sweet Valley, with a long line of provincial and zonal representatives over the years.  Hockey is offered from Grade 2 (U8), and inter-school matches are played from Grade 3 (U9) to Grade 7 (U13 and U14).

The U8's and U9 girls have practices at school, while all other age groups practice at Bergvliet Hockey Club.  Boys practices take place on Tuesdays, and matches are on Wednesdays (U12 and U13) and Thursdays (U9 - U11). Girls practices take place on Mondays (U10 - U14) and Tuesdays (U9), and matches on Thursdays.

As we have a lot of interest in hockey, and are able to field at least two teams in each age group, our league matches for boys tend to be against the boys' schools, as most of the other co-ed schools are able to field only one team per age group.  Our league matches for girls are against the girls' schools as well as the co-ed schools in our regions.  This means that several of our boys' matches as well as many tournaments take place on artificial surfaces (Astroturf), and it is to our hockey players credit that they remain competitive despite not having a similar surface on which to practice.  It is envisaged that the Bergvliet High School Astroturf will be completed early in 2012, which will give us opportunitites to practise and play home matches on this surface.
